a long time,
and my heart quiets
to the soft tap of a finger on glass;
when my blood slows
its rapid-river course
and trickles cold through my veins,
will I yield? Will I kneel
before this God I mocked
in my youth
and suckle comfort
from the breast of His virgin mother?
Or will this void
which is my interior
have learned by then
to mingle with the heavens
and become the stuff of stars?
