Study of a Red Recliner

The recliner in the corner sits empty
as though my father might return, omnipresent
and invisible as Elijah at Passover. Red fabric
worn thin where he sat rooted as leaves fell to crisp,
and his sons left to seek Friday night fortunes
in the dying autumn light. The television is stuck
on the same channel, and my mother knits in her chair,
little dog at her feet. Dad never spoke much while he watched
a game: a curse or exultation. A sitcom or movie might elicit
his signature high laugh, but usually, he was quiet
while the fuzzing television hummed its VHF mantra:
until everyone is home,
until everyone is home.
