In Eve’s Defense

Surely the apple
in the sun,
warmed and ripened
to sweetest perfection,
sugars crystallizing a knowledge
unable to contain itself,
surely that fruit above all fruits,
longed to be picked,
longed for the shadow
of the first hand to fall across it.
This singular orb deserved a fate
greater than worm castings.

How it must have shuddered
as fingertips first grazed
its smooth flesh, and then,
joy!
Wrapped firmly round its body.
The pure pleasure of the squeeze,
the pull,
and finally,
Oh! The pluck!

Surely the apple
desired to be consumed.
It must have rained joyful tears
as lips brushed its skin
in that first forbidden bruising kiss,

the teeth,
the tooth,
the crunch,
the juice,
the tongue.

“Oh! To be tasted.
To know and be known,”
the apple surely whispered.
“The blessing.
The calamity.”
