For the Birds

Eagles circle high on updrafts
no naked eye can perceive.
Bobwhites are whistling,
swifts frenzy twisting
as killdeer play make-believe.

Purple martins are evicted
from homes hemming the sky.
Sparrows steal nests,
pierce fledgling martin breasts
as yellowhammer turns its blind eye.

The jay calls for justice.
The day slides closed as a cage.
The mockingbird mocks
crows and their talk
of murders and ruing and rage.

Migration comes in its season.
Winter takes all but the wrens.
In the colding hush,
they sing of the thrush,
and all who shall never fly again.
