Easter Vigil 2006

—St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, Birmingham, AL

And when they kindled the new fire
the flames danced,
and the people stepped back.
The fire reflected in the old man's glasses,
and the bishop stood holding his crosier.
On the hill behind him, Christ,
almost obscured by the smoke,
slowly pushed his shopping cart,
cans piled miraculously high,
up the hill.
