Did You Come Expecting Something Sweet?

Everything delicious is damned.

The peaches mold on their limbs.
The wine turns to vinegar.
The meat turns to rot.
The water is muddy,
and the liver is shot.

Jesus in the apple orchard.
Mohammed in the wheat. Buddha
in the woodshed drinking austerity.
Genghis Khan awakes singing Tuvan blues,
and God whistles Dixie
while She polishes Her shoes.

Everything delicious is damned.

The wheat all burns in the field.
The bees stop buzzing.
The oysters are not.
The fish are all fished.
The propaganda’s been bought.

The cows burn their barn. Chickens fly their coop.
The bulls gore men draped in designer suits.
The rooster won’t stop crowing.
The goats bust their pen.
The farmhouse just got stormed
by pigs Orwellian.

Everything delicious is damned.

Priests order pizza. Rabbis prefer soup.
Imams roast lamb while dancing
to Fairuz. The Pope is melting butter
for a sauce la Baudelaire
while nuns order shawarma
from a food truck in Times Square.

Chefs are in the kitchen clattering about.
Lest we all shriek, we cram spoons
in our mouths as we dutifully await
their cunning last plates,
but tiny cakes and meringues
will not alter our fate.

Everything delicious is damned.
