Decoration Day

Late May in Alabama, wind warm as tree-ripened peaches,
and clouds like schools of red-eye bass in the blue blue sky,
bluer than The Bluest Eye which I am re-reading, nodding
as my fingers trace the trail of Toni Morrison’s words. Not far away,
a man carves his own precise lawnmower lines in row upon darkening row,
the sweet smell of cut-grass, pure nostalgia, and this bench has grown
cold and hard as the shadows, but before I rise, I finger-tip touch the letters
of your name carved in the granite stone.
