Argus Panoptes

The 100-eyed all-seeing giant slept in my psyche
40 years or more to awaken this morning
at the prod of a Google search. Now he sprawls
across the deck of a rental in the north Georgia mountains,
naked, but for a towel emblazoned with Live. Laugh. Love.

86 of his eyes are upon me as I try to compose
a poem of substance; strong but not too weighty,
like graphite. Cicadas ebb and flow, and the voices of men,
either warriors or golfers, rise like whispers on the morning breeze.
Argus yawns, loudly.

I show him the hot-tub; reassure him it is not, in fact, Charybdis.
His splashing is distracting, and I abandon all hope of writing.
With a bottle of rosé to share, I join him in the steaming pool
where he talks for hours of animal husbandry and the treachery of gods.
